In a throwback to the fiercest days of the “Roses Rivalry,” Leeds United secured a famous 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night.
A clinical first-half brace from Noah Okafor proved enough to survive a late Manchester United onslaught, as the Red Devils were hampered by a transformative second-half red card shown to Lisandro Martinez.
The victory marks a signature moment for Leeds in Round 32, dealing a massive blow to Michael Carrick’s side while reinforcing the visitors’ reputation as giant-killers on the road.
Leeds silenced the Stretford end just five minutes into the contest. Following a period of early United possession, Leeds countered with precision, allowing Okafor to find space inside the box and arrow a first-time strike into the bottom right corner.
While United looked for an immediate response through Amad Diallo and Benjamin Sesko, the visitors doubled their advantage in the 29th minute. Once again, it was Okafor who proved the protagonist; picking up the ball in space on the edge of the area, his speculative effort took a wicked deflection off a defender, leaving goalkeeper Senne Lammens helpless as the ball trickled into the net for 2-0.
The complexion of the match shifted dramatically in the 56th minute. Following a contentious challenge by Lisandro Martinez, referee Paul Tierney was summoned to the VAR monitor. After a brief review, the Argentine defender was shown a straight red card, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb and a man light for the final half-hour.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, United displayed remarkable resilience. In the 69th minute, Bruno Fernandes showcased his enduring quality with a pinpoint lofted cross that found Casemiro. The veteran Brazilian rose highest to power a header inside the right post, reigniting hope across Old Trafford.
The final 20 minutes devolved into a siege on the Leeds goal. Karl Darlow, in a man-of-the-match performance, produced a string of “astonishing” saves to deny Leny Yoro and Matheus Cunha from point-blank range.
United threw everything forward, including a 91st-minute snap-shot from Diogo Dalot that whistled over the bar, but the Leeds backline, anchored by the tireless Ethan Ampadu, refused to buckle.
