Panic As Gas Explosion Hits Lagos Shops

One person was severely injured on Tuesday after a gas explosion occurred at Adeleye Street, in the Doyin area of Orile-Iganmu, Lagos State.

The incident, which caused panic among residents and traders in the area, was said to have happened while a gas attendant was refilling a cylinder in one of the shops located in front of a demolished building.

Naija News reports that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement, saying it received a distress call at about 12:23 p.m. and arrived at the scene by 12:34 p.m.

According to the agency, firefighters from the Sari Iganmu and Ajegunle Fire Stations were immediately deployed to the area to contain the situation and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

The agency said the explosion happened in one of two shops located at the frontage of a demolished building on a half plot of land.

It stated, “The incident was caused by a gas explosion, which occurred while an attendant was refilling a gas cylinder in one of the two shops in the frontage of a demolished building on a half plot of land.”

The injured attendant was rescued from the scene and taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

Although the agency described the injuries as severe, it said no death had been recorded as of the time of its update.

The Deputy Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Ogabi Olajide, said an investigation had commenced to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Olajide added that further updates would be made available after the conclusion of preliminary findings.
