Ronaldo’s 6th World Cup begins with frustration as DR Congo earn historic draw against Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo’s bid for a dream start to his record-equalling sixth FIFA World Cup appearance ended in disappointment as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday.

Portugal took an early lead through Joao Neves, who headed home Pedro Neto’s cross in the sixth minute of their Group K clash. The African side responded just before halftime when Yoane Wissa rose highest to score DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal and secure a historic point for his country.

Despite enjoying most of the possession, Portugal struggled to break down a determined Congolese defence and also had a Joao Cancelo goal ruled out for offside.

Ronaldo, largely quiet throughout the contest, missed two late opportunities that could have sealed victory for Roberto Martinez’s side.

The result marked a memorable return to the World Cup for DR Congo, who are making their first appearance at the tournament since 1974.
