The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has elected Mrs Anita Zugwai-Chukwu as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
She emerged through consensus at the party’s national convention held on Saturday in Abuja, attended by party leaders, delegates and supporters from across the country.

In her acceptance speech, Zugwai-Chukwu pledged transparent and accountable leadership and urged Nigerians, particularly youths and women, to support her vision for justice, security and prosperity.
She promised to protect the party’s ideals, uphold its constitution and work closely with stakeholders, stressing that the stability and growth of the YPP would take precedence over personal ambition.
YPP National Chairman, Bishop Amakiri, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its founding principles despite ongoing political realignments.
He said the YPP had consistently produced credible candidates who went on to win elections and remained focused on promoting competent leaders committed to public service.
According to him, elected officials on the party’s platform have upheld its mantra, “Service to the People,” which he described as the party’s intellectual property.
Amakiri noted that the party had produced notable lawmakers and legislative leaders who distinguished themselves through effective representation and leadership.
He also acknowledged the impact of the death of former senator Ifeanyi Ubah on the party.
“It would be unfair to say that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s death did not affect the party. He was a strong force and contributed immensely,” he said.
However, he dismissed claims that the party had lost relevance, arguing that no general election had been conducted since Ubah’s death.
He added that the late senator’s electoral successes gave the YPP national visibility and helped lay the foundation for its growth.
Amakiri also rejected reports that the party was considering merging with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
