Republic of Benin’s parliament has passed a constitutional revision that increases the presidential term from five to seven years and introduces a new upper chamber of the legislature.
Despite the longer tenure, the two-term cap for presidents remains unchanged in the West African country.
President Patrice Talon is due to leave office next April, completing ten years in power. His preferred successor, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is widely seen as the frontrunner in the upcoming April election.
The amendment secured strong backing in the National Assembly, receiving 90 votes in favour and 19 against.
Under the changes, the newly created senate will include a minimum of 25 members. Some will be appointed directly by the president, while others will serve as ex-officio members, including former heads of state.
