Our reforms will empower Nigerian youths, Tinubu tells Duke of Edinburgh

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says the reforms undertaken by his administration are aimed at strengthening the economy and key institutions, while also securing the future of Nigerian youths by equipping them with skills that will make them globally competitive.
The President stated this on Monday when he received the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, at the State House in Abuja. He noted that young people remain central to the government’s efforts to reposition the economy, adding that their involvement and ownership of the ongoing reforms will drive Nigeria toward a more prosperous future.
Prince Edward, who chairs the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, was in Abuja to brief the President on the forthcoming international award ceremony scheduled to take place in Lagos.
“We will be participating in the G-20 this week. It is the third time Africa is hosting the G-20, and the central issue is about our youth. We need to strengthen the economy for our youth,” President Tinubu said.
“The reforms are about growth and prosperity for the nation. They take into full consideration our demography and the need for skills development. We are adopting global best practices and exploring opportunities across various areas of training.
“We now have a special education loan fund that ensures no one is left behind. It guarantees that students who gain admission into universities can remain in school and receive support to complete their education. Our goal is to use education to drive down poverty,” he added.
The President explained that the ongoing reforms cut across multiple sectors, with the broader aim of fostering harmony among stakeholders and ensuring long-term synergy to achieve national development targets.
He highlighted the laying of fibre optic cables and other infrastructural projects as part of efforts to expand access and improve the inclusion of young Nigerians in the country’s development process.
Tinubu further noted that the government is tackling security challenges with “notable results” and expressed appreciation to humanitarian organisations working to alleviate the suffering of victims of terrorism.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, said Nigeria’s median age—17 years—underscores the need for reforms that are deliberately designed to expand opportunities for participation, skill acquisition and economic growth.
Prince Edward commended President Tinubu for the economic reforms, which he said have been receiving positive global attention. He added that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ceremony in Lagos will celebrate the talents, dedication and contributions of Nigerian youths.
He said 320 young Nigerian people will be recognised at the event, organised in partnership with the Lagos State Government.
The Duke also praised the Finance Minister for consistently emphasising the role of youths in the nation’s reforms, describing him as “a brilliant trustee and a champion of young people.”
