Over N3bn property saved during yuletide – Fire Service

The Controller-General (CG) of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Samuel Olumode Adeyemi, has disclosed that property worth over N3 billion was saved during the 2025 yuletide.

Mr Adeyemi disclosed this at the decoration ceremony of newly promoted senior officers of the service in Abuja on Wednesday.

CG Adeyemi said there were many fire incidents across the country during the yuletide, but that the strategic policy of the service, which banned leave and holidays for personnel of the operations department, paid off as prompt interventions saved a lot of property.

He said, “On the 17th of December, 2025, during a virtual meeting with all zonal controllers nationwide, I issued a Brigade Order of ‘No Leave, No Holidays’ during the critical festive period.

“That decision paid off in December, 2025, and into the New Year. Our officers responded swiftly to multiple fire incidents across the country. From Lagos to Gombe tanker fire; from Abuja to Yenagoa candle fire which claimed the life of an 11-year-old child; from Enugu to Kano, the Great Nigeria Insurance building fire; to the first fire in the new year at Cake Hot restaurant within River Plate Park, Abuja; and the Federal Inland Revenue Service fire also +in Abuja, where I was personally present. Our preparedness saved lives and property worth billions of naira. These outcomes reaffirm a simple truth: readiness saves lives.”

CG Adeyemi also disclosed plans for the establishment of fire service stations in public higher institutions across the country as part of strategies to reduce damage from fire outbreaks.

He said, “Plans are underway to establish functional fire stations within public tertiary institutions to safeguard lives and national investments in education.”

Speaking about the promoted personnel, the CG said they earned their promotions through a rigorous, transparent and highly competitive process conducted by the civil defence, correctional service, fire and immigration services board in collaboration with the Army Resource Centre, adding that 2,620 officers across ranks were promoted.
