Ghana: Illegal miner shot dead during clash with police at galamsey site

An illegal miner has been shot and killed following a violent confrontation with police officers at a galamsey site, according to preliminary reports.

The incident occurred when a team of police officers moved in to stop ongoing illegal mining activities in the area.

Witnesses say the operation quickly turned chaotic after some of the miners resisted the officers and attacked them as they attempted to enforce the law.

During the confrontation, one of the miners allegedly overpowered a police officer and forcefully seized his firearm.

The suspect reportedly attempted to flee the scene with the weapon, prompting the officers to open fire. The miner was shot and later pronounced dead.

Sources indicate that the police action was taken in response to the immediate threat posed to officers and others present at the site.

The firearm that was taken from the officer was later retrieved.

The body of the deceased miner has since been conveyed to a nearby mortuary for preservation and autopsy. At the same time, police have begun investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police authorities are expected to issue an official statement after investigations are concluded.
