KENYA: Another Police Recruit Dies During GSU Training in Magadi

A police recruit collapsed and died while undergoing routine training at the General Service Unit (GSU) field campus in Magadi, Kajiado County, in the latest tragedy to hit Kenya’s security training institutions.

Police confirmed that the family of the deceased, identified as Cheme Chombo Cheme, reported the incident, which occurred on Saturday during a recruit training course at the GSU Field Campus in Magadi.

According to police, the recruit suddenly lost consciousness during the training session. Fellow officers immediately rushed him to Magadi Hospital, where he received initial treatment before doctors referred him to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised care.

However, medics pronounced him dead on arrival.

Authorities said the body was preserved at the Kenyatta University Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

The incident raises fresh concerns over the safety of recruits in training, bringing the total number of deaths reported in police colleges since December 2025 to three.

Previous cases occurred at the Kiganjo Police Training College and the Administration Police Training College (APTC) Embakasi Campus in Nairobi.

On January 18, 2026, another police recruit died while receiving treatment at APTC Embakasi. The recruit had earlier sought medical attention after experiencing chest pain, dizziness, cough, and extreme fatigue before succumbing while under care.

The spate of deaths has not been limited to police training institutions.

A similar tragedy recently struck the military after three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruits died following medical complications during a routine training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

In a statement, KDF said the incident occurred on January 29, 2026, during a scheduled endurance exercise.

“The recruits developed medical complications while participating in a routine endurance exercise,” the military said.

KDF explained that on-site medical teams provided immediate first aid before evacuating the affected recruits to Eldoret Regional Hospital for advanced treatment.

Despite what the military described as “concerted efforts” by medical personnel, doctors later pronounced all three recruits dead.

The Kenya Defence Forces said it had formally notified the next of kin and is offering support to the affected families.

“The Kenya Defence Forces conveys its deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, fellow recruits and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time,” the statement read.

KDF has since launched a comprehensive investigation in line with established military procedures to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The military said the findings will guide any necessary measures aimed at strengthening the safety, health, and welfare of recruits and personnel undergoing training.
