KENYA: KCAA Responds to Construction of Petrol Station at JKIA’s Flight Path

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has clarified widespread reports on social media regarding the construction of a petrol station near the flight path of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

In a statement on Monday, March 9, KCAA acknowledged public concern about the development located along Mombasa Road, a major highway that runs near the main airport.

According to the aviation regulator, the petrol station development was evaluated in accordance with established aviation safety regulations, and the project was approved after detailed analysis.

“Attention has been drawn through social media to an ongoing construction of a petrol station at JKIA’s flight path,” the Authority said in its statement.

“The development referenced near JKIA along Mombasa Road has undergone the required review and analysis and has been granted approval as required by the regulations,” it added.

KCAA further emphasised that all development proposals within or near JKIA, and at any other airport in the country, must follow strict procedures.

The regulator reiterated that projects near airports are subject to due process and must comply with established aviation safety protocols before approval is granted.

The clarification comes amid growing public scrutiny over infrastructure development near major transport hubs, particularly airports, where structures, lighting, emissions, or height could potentially interfere with flight operations.

KCAA maintained that developments around JKIA are continuously monitored to ensure they align with both national regulations and international aviation safety standards.

The latest update comes just a month after KCAA directed residents living near airports and airstrips to install specialised, high-visibility red flashing aeronautical obstacle lights within the next 30 days.

In a statement on February 3, KCAA noted that the move was aimed at safeguarding air navigation safety and ensuring compliance with existing aviation laws.

The Authority said the law prohibits the construction of any building or structure within 15 kilometres of an aerodrome unless prior approval has been granted.

KCAA clarified that all developers planning projects within the defined aerodrome vicinity must first submit applications for review and approval of the acceptable building height.
