Tinubu Appoints Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu As Foreign Affairs Minister, Names Enikanolaiye Minister Of State

April 29, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has appointed Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The appointment followed the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down from office to pursue political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Presidency announced that Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who previously served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, will now lead the ministry as substantive minister, while President Tinubu also nominated Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The appointments were disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

The latest changes in the foreign affairs ministry are seen as part of President Tinubu’s broader efforts to reposition Nigeria’s diplomatic architecture amid growing regional and international economic, security and geopolitical challenges.

Since joining the Federal Executive Council, Odumegwu-Ojukwu has played visible roles in diplomatic engagements, regional cooperation initiatives and diaspora-related matters. Her appointment is expected to deepen continuity in Nigeria’s engagements with strategic partners across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas.

A lawyer, diplomat and former Nigerian ambassador, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, is also widely known for her advocacy in cultural diplomacy and international relations.

Her emergence as Foreign Affairs Minister further places her among the few women to occupy one of the nation’s most strategic ministerial portfolios.

President Tinubu’s nomination of Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs has equally drawn attention within diplomatic circles because of his extensive experience in Nigeria’s foreign service.

Before the nomination, Enikanolaiye served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, where he was involved in policy coordination and international engagements for the administration.

A seasoned diplomat with more than three decades in service, Enikanolaiye previously served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and held several strategic diplomatic postings.

His career includes assignments in Addis Ababa, Belgrade, Ottawa, London and New Delhi, positions that exposed him to multilateral diplomacy, bilateral negotiations and international development partnerships.

According to the Presidency, the appointments form part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy framework for “greater efficiency, strategic engagement and stronger global partnerships.”

The President urged the newly appointed officials to work diligently in promoting Nigeria’s national interest, advancing economic diplomacy, fostering regional peace and stability, and protecting the welfare of Nigerians both at home and abroad.
