June 11 (THEWILL) — Akwa Ibom State has been ranked among Nigeria’s top 10 best-governed states in the 2025 Governance Performance Index released by the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS), further boosting the state’s profile in public sector administration and service delivery.
The state scored 64 percent in the 2025 CIAPS Governance Performance Index (CGPI), earning a place among the country’s leading performers in governance and institutional effectiveness.
The CGPI, developed by the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies, assesses the performance of Nigeria’s 36 states across key governance indicators, including transparency, accountability, e-governance, institutional efficiency and public service delivery.
According to the report, Akwa Ibom’s ranking reflects improvements in governance systems, public sector management and citizen-focused policies aimed at enhancing service delivery and strengthening public institutions.
The assessment provides an evidence-based framework for measuring governance outcomes across the federation and identifying states that have demonstrated progress in administrative effectiveness and accountability.
Analysts say the ranking highlights the growing importance of data-driven governance assessments in promoting transparency and encouraging healthy competition among states.
The report also noted that sustained investments in critical sectors such as education, agriculture, tourism, rural development, innovation and public sector reforms have become important indicators in measuring governance performance and development outcomes.
Akwa Ibom’s inclusion among the top-performing states adds to its recent development milestones and underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen institutions, improve governance structures and create an enabling environment for economic and social growth.
It is believed the recognition will further position the state as one of Nigeria’s emerging models for effective governance, while reinforcing the need for continued reforms aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens.
The CIAPS Governance Performance Index is designed to benchmark governance standards across Nigeria and serve as a tool for promoting accountability, transparency and evidence-based policymaking at the subnational level.
