KENYA: Injuries Reported as Popular Matatu Overturns Along Thika Road

Several passengers were injured on Tuesday night after a matatu, attached to the Manmo SACCO overturned at Muthaiga along the busy Thika Superhighway in Nairobi.

The accident occurred shortly after 10 pm near Muthaiga Primary School, bringing traffic to a temporary standstill as rescue efforts got underway.

Witnesses and passengers blamed the crash on reckless driving, claiming the driver had been speeding from Nairobi’s central business district moments before the vehicle overturned.

According to passengers, the driver began driving dangerously shortly after leaving Moi Avenue and ignored repeated pleas from those on board to slow down.

One of the passengers said several commuters raised concerns about the driver’s conduct, but their warnings went unheeded.

“Our Manmo car overturned at Muthaiga Primary School. The driver had been speeding right from Moi Avenue near Clarion Hotel despite several complaints from a lady who was sitting beside me. We ended up hitting a bolt, and the bus overturned a few metres away,” the passenger said.

Videos and images seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed members of the public rushing to the scene to assist the injured as emergency responders worked to evacuate victims from the wreckage.

The exact number of passengers injured was not immediately established, while authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident by Wednesday morning.

The crash comes barely two weeks after another matatu overturned along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, leaving several passengers injured in what was described as a mass-casualty incident.

In that June 3 accident, witnesses claimed the 32-seater public service vehicle was being driven recklessly, with some passengers reportedly hanging outside moments before the driver lost control.

The Kenya Red Cross deployed emergency response teams to the scene, providing first aid and evacuation support to those affected as investigations into the crash commenced.

The latest incident is likely to renew concerns over reckless driving by some PSV operators despite ongoing crackdowns by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), including driver re-testing, vehicle impoundments, and crew suspensions aimed at improving road safety.
