President William Ruto has invited Arsenal Football Club to visit Kenya after thousands of supporters flooded the streets of Nairobi to celebrate the club’s English Premier League triumph last month.
Speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, Ruto said he had already extended an invitation to the North London club to visit Kenya.
“I have sent an invitation because I think it would be a great moment for Arsenal to come to Kenya. They have great fans,” Ruto told the publication.
The President, an outspoken Arsenal supporter, said he was surprised by the scale of celebrations that erupted across Nairobi after Mikel Arteta’s side ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title.
“Arsenal finally closed the gap, and it was a huge celebration. I was shocked in Nairobi,” he said.
He added: “It was a big celebration and I am trying to see whether sometime next year Arsenal can come to Kenya.”
On May 24, thousands of Arsenal fans took over the streets of Nairobi, turning parts of the city into a sea of red and white as they celebrated the club’s league triumph.
Supporters from across the country converged on the Central Business District, with major roads brought to a standstill as jubilant fans marched through the city waving club flags and chanting Arsenal songs.
The celebrations attracted international attention, with images and videos of the massive turnout widely shared across global media and social media platforms.
Ruto said the overwhelming support demonstrated by Kenyan fans made the country an ideal destination for the club to visit.
The invitation also comes as Kenya prepares to unveil the 60,000-seat Talanta Stadium, which has previously been floated as a potential venue for a high-profile international exhibition match.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has said construction of the stadium at Jamhuri Grounds has reached 91 per cent completion, with the facility expected to be ready next month.
Arsenal were among the teams being mentioned as clubs that could feature in the stadium’s opening event, although no official confirmation has been made on when the stadium will officially be launched.
Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham have both visited and played friendly matches in South Africa, with Everton playing in Tanzania.
