NADCEL 2026: COAS honours fallen heroes, urges troops to remain resolute

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has paid tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes, saying their patriotism, courage and selfless service remain a source of inspiration to officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army.

He spoke on Sunday at the interdenominational church service held at the All Saints Protestant Church, Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026.

Represented by the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, the COAS said the service was an opportunity to honour members of the Armed Forces, who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.

He said their sacrifices continue to remind serving personnel of the values of duty, loyalty and commitment to national service.

General Shaibu also commended troops deployed across the country’s various theatres of operation for their resilience and dedication.

He urged them to remain courageous, disciplined and professional in carrying out their responsibilities

In his sermon, the Director of Chaplain Services (Roman Catholic), Brigadier General Francis Maimagani, encouraged officers and soldiers to remain faithful to God and committed to serving humanity through their profession.

He urged them to stay steadfast and courageous in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

The church service was attended by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), represented by Major General Henry Wesley (retd), representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, Principal Staff Officers from the Defence and Service Headquarters, senior serving and retired military officers, officers and soldiers, as well as members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) and the Soldiers’ Wives Association.
