KENYA: Missing Activist Found Hospitalised at KNH

Activist Davis Lichuma has resurfaced after going missing for over three days in an alleged abduction incident.

Lichuma was found on Sunday, June 28, evening, at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) while undergoing treatment at the facility.

Human rights group Vocal Africa and other activists said Lichuma was found in a serious health condition, suggesting he may have been tortured and beaten before being dumped at the hospital.

“Following our press conference this morning to demand the police immediately release comrade Lichumba or face widespread demos, we have this evening confirmed that comrade Lichumba has been found, but in bad shape at KNH, comrades are organiosing to transfer him to a private hospuital immediately,” stated Hussein Khalid, a human rights activist.

According to other organisations, Lichumba was unable to speak when he was found raising concerns over his physical and psychological condition.

“While we are relieved that he has been found, we remain deeply concerned about his condition. At the time of the discovery, Lichumba was unable to speak, raising concerns about what he may have been subjected to during the he was missing,” read part of a statement by the Social Justice Centres Working Group.

The rights groups have called for an immediate and independent investigation into the matter and circumstances surrounding Lichumba’s disappearance, including any injuries and trauma he may have sustained and also to ensure the individuals responsible for his unlawful detention are brought to book.

The developments come hours after the human rights groups issued the police a 24-hour ultimatum to release the missing activists or face fresh nationwide demonstrations on Monday.

The groups were calling for the release of three activists, including Lichumba, Macmillan Kiari, and Abdulaziz Molo, also known as Zizo.

With Lichumba found, it is, however, not clear whether the demonstrations will still be held on Monday in protest against the alleged detention of two other activists.

Following the ultimatum by the lobby groups, the police, in a statement later on Sunday, confirmed the reports of the missing individuals, confirming that Lichuma was reported missing at the central police station, noting that the police were pursuing the matter through professional investigations.

“The National Police Service (NPS) has noted allegations circulating in mainstream and social media regarding enforced disappearances and torture. Furthermore, we acknowledge receipt of a report of a missing person, namely Davis Lichuma, which was made at Central Police Station in Nairobi,” police stated in a statement.
