KENYA: CS Announces New Reforms in Schools to Curb Indiscipline

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced that the government will establish a multi-stakeholder team to address increasing cases of student unrest and school fires that have disrupted learning activities in a number of secondary schools in the country.

Speaking during an event in Meru County on Sunday, June 28, Ogamba said the task force will bring together key players in the education sector, including parents, teachers, religious leaders, school sponsors, and government officials, to find lasting solutions to the problem.

According to the cs, the team will examine the root causes of student unrest and recommend measures aimed at restoring discipline and improving the learning environment in schools.

“We’ve agreed that we are going to form a multi-stakeholder team to discuss the issues that are affecting our students  in all our schools,” Ogamba stated.

“We want all of us as stakeholders in the education sector, from parents, from the government, from teachers, from the people in the religious sector and sponsors, to come together so that we can ensure that we get a solution to this perennial problem that is affecting our children,” he added.

Ogamba said the moves come from the realisation that solving the challenge requires a collective approach involving all stakeholders in the education sector.

The announcement comes amid growing concern over a series of school unrest incidents and fires reported in different parts of the country, some of which have resulted in fatalities and destruction of school property.

One of the incidents is the fire tragedy at Utemisghi Girls’ Academy in Gigligil that led to 16 girls losing their lives.

Apart from that, several incidents have been witnessed lately, with over 200 schools forced to close down indefinitely as students burn dormitories or stage protests, issuing a series of demands to teachers.

Ogamba’s announcement, however, comes weeks after he announced the creation of the task force, which will examine the factors contributing to the unrest and propose strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.

At the same time, the Ministry directed schools to urgently convene Parents Association meetings to review the welfare of learners and assess the state of affairs in their respective institutions.

The CS said parents, teachers, and school administrators must work closely together to identify emerging concerns and address them before they escalate into major disciplinary issues.

Schools have also been instructed to strengthen guidance and counselling programmes while enhancing mechanisms through which learners can raise grievances and seek support.

In addition, school managements have been directed to reinforce safety measures and promptly address concerns raised by students to foster a conducive learning environment.
