Source: Instagram Liza recently revealed that women had been sending her direct messages asking her to sleep with their husbands or boyfriends and infect them with HIV, with some even offering to pay her.

She rejected the requests, explaining that she shares her HIV journey to educate the public and encourage people living with HIV, not to facilitate revenge.

Following her revelation, several Kenyans linked the alleged requests to a storyline in The Polygamist, which follows the dramatic life of self-made banker and CEO Jonasi Gomora.

According to the storyline, Gomora’s powerful empire begins to collapse as chaos erupts among his multiple relationships.

Gomora’s first wife, second wife, mistress, and girlfriend all find themselves locked in a fierce battle over love, loyalty, and his vast wealth.

How did Kenyans react to the women’s request to the TikToker? Hilda Nyabiya stated:

“People are learning from the polygamist.. Joyce Gomora herself… sisterhood, womenhood is proud of you.” Naomi Nasimiyu stated:

“I came across this story before The Polygamist was released. Just to let you know that art reflects society.” Norah Omweri stated:

“Polygamist going practical..Madam Joyce Gomora, see what your students are now doing to their Jonasi partners.” Nderitu Sarah stated:

“Kwani HIV ni chakula ati kama iko na sumu akule atakufa?????weeeeee ni ng’ombe ya wapi unatakia mwenzo ugonjwa, shetani akulambe uso.” Judy Njeri stated:

“Stop watching the movie Polygamist; mtaharibu ndoa zenu and stop taking advantage of achieng situation sio kupenda kwake living with HIV.” Evanah Ardama said:

“So women watched Polygamist on how the goat wife asked a woman to infect his husband with HIV. Now they’re doing the same.” Lyn Nyar Alego stated:

“Wapi makofi…the only lesson we took from the Polygamist is if he’s cheating, find someone to infect him with Echaivi.” What does a health advocate say about Kenyan women’s requests? Amid the online debate, health advocate and Let’s Talk Nursing founder Leonard Otieno urged the public to reject the idea of using HIV as a weapon.

“HIV is not a weapon for revenge. Intentionally trying to infect someone is wrong, unethical, and may be a criminal offence,” he said. Otieno also used the opportunity to educate the public about HIV transmission, explaining that people living with HIV who are on effective treatment and have an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit the virus.

“HIV is not as easy as many people think, especially when a person living with HIV is on effective treatment and has an undetectable viral load (U=U), meaning they cannot sexually transmit the virus,” he stated. Further, he warned that seeking revenge through sexual encounters could instead expose individuals to other sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, HPV, herpes, and hepatitis.

“If your partner is unfaithful, the healthiest response is to leave, get tested, and protect yourself. Let’s end stigma, promote HIV testing, PrEP, treatment adherence, and responsible relationships,” he added. Liza Achieng is an HIV warrior. Photo: Liza Achieng.
