By Saturday afternoon, Maloba had already achieved one of the key milestones of the challenge: surpassing the previous Guinness World Record of 31 hours, 42 minutes and 54 seconds.
Who currently holds Guinness World Record? The record had been set by Nigerian mathematician Sanusi Kazeem in Ilorin, Nigeria, in April 2025. However, Maloba was not content with merely edging past the existing benchmark.
Driven by his desire to prove that mathematics can be mastered through patience, persistence and practice, he continued teaching deep into the night and into Sunday morning, eventually stopping the clock at exactly 45 hours.
The achievement marks a significant moment not only for the teacher himself but also for Kenya’s growing presence on the global record-breaking stage.
Throughout the marathon lesson, Maloba remained focused on his central message: that mathematics should not be viewed as an intimidating subject.
Instead, he encouraged learners to approach it as they would a long-distance race, requiring consistency, discipline and determination rather than fear.

Role of students in Maloba’s challenge Students also played a crucial role in the success of the marathon. Rotating groups attended the sessions throughout the 45 hours to ensure the classroom remained occupied at all times, as required under Guinness guidelines.
Although participants in marathon record attempts are allowed five minutes of break time for every completed hour, these breaks must be carefully managed.
Maloba strategically accumulated and used his allotted rest periods to help maintain his energy and concentration throughout the challenge.
Observers noted that despite visible fatigue during the final stages, he continued engaging students and delivering lessons with remarkable commitment.
Has Maloba’s record been ratified? While celebrations are already underway, the record has not yet been officially confirmed. Guinness World Records must first review all submitted evidence, including witness statements, video recordings and event logs, before formally ratifying the achievement.
Should the application be approved, Fenwick Cyril Maloba will become the new Guinness World Record holder for the longest continuous mathematics lesson, securing his place in history and giving Kenya another reason to celebrate on the global stage.
For now, however, many of his students believe he has already achieved something equally important: proving that with enough determination, even the most daunting challenges can be solved.
