April 13, (THEWILL) — Another commander and six soldiers have been killed after troops of Sector 3 of the Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, repelled a terrorist attack on a military position in Monguno, Borno State.
This comes less than a week after the Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI in the North-East theatre, Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, was killed alongside three other personnel by insurgents last Thursday.
A statement issued on Monday by the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, said the attack occurred late Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the Charlie 13 location, where troops engaged insurgents in a fierce gun battle.
The military said the troops “successfully repelled the terrorist attack”, adding that they “engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle and forced them to withdraw from the location”, while maintaining control of the position throughout the encounter.
However, the military disclosed that tragedy struck shortly after the encounter when the commanding officer, who had moved towards the frontline to assess the situation, drove into an improvised explosive device (IED).
The statement noted: “The Commanding Officer, while moving towards the location to assess the situation and coordinate follow-up actions, unfortunately drove into an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion severely damaged his vehicle, resulting in the death of the Commanding Officer and six other personnel.”
Describing the late officer, the military said he demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership, “His actions, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised, reflected the highest traditions of military leadership; courage, selfless service, and leading from the front.
“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.”
Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the personnel, saying: “Operation HADIN KAI deeply mourns the loss of this exceptional officer and the other brave personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.”
The statement added that “their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served.”
Despite the setback, the military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, stating that troops “remain determined to deny terrorists freedom of action and continue operations aimed at restoring lasting peace in the region.”
