The All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Kwande and Ushongo Local Government Areas of Benue State protested what they described as an attempt to replace the winner of the party’s House of Representatives primary election with another aspirant.
The peaceful protest, saw party faithful call on the APC National Working Committee (NWC) to uphold the outcome of the May 16 primary by recognising Prof. Iornem Kohol as the party’s candidate for the Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election.
The protesters rejected reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination documents had allegedly been issued to the incumbent lawmaker, Rep. Terseer Ugbor, despite his defeat in the primary.
According to the protesters, Kohol secured 40,672 votes to emerge victorious over five other aspirants, while Ugbor polled 750 votes.
Led by party members including Comrade Ken Kaase, Aondolumun Ordorugh and Fidelis of Mbakuha, the demonstrators urged the APC leadership to protect the integrity of its internal democratic process by respecting the decision of party members.
They argued that recognising any aspirant other than the declared primary winner would undermine confidence in the party and weaken its commitment to transparent candidate selection.
The protesters also maintained that the House of Representatives seat should rotate to Ushongo Local Government Area, noting that Kwande had held the position for about two decades while Ushongo had gone 16 years without producing a representative.
Receiving the protesters, Adzu assured them that their concerns would be forwarded to Governor Hyacinth Alia, expressing optimism that the candidate who legitimately emerged from the primary election would ultimately be recognised by the party.
