Portugal kept their 2026 World Cup campaign alive after a tense 2-1 win over Croatia in Toronto.
It was a night of drama, frustration and controversy.
Croatia took the lead through Ivan Perisic. Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot. Goncalo Ramos then came off the bench to score the winner in stoppage time.

Croatia were furious.

Should he start against Spain? Should Ramos now lead the line? Can Portugal carry both emotion and balance into the next round?
Those are fair questions.
But Portugal’s problem is not only Ronaldo.
Their midfield struggled to dominate. Bruno Fernandes had a quiet game. Vitinha saw plenty of the ball but did not drive the attack enough. Joao Neves worked hard, but Portugal still lacked control.
The changes improved Portugal’s rhythm.
That gives Martinez a selection headache before the Spain clash.
Portugal Set Up Spain Showdown
Portugal will now face Spain in the last 16.
It is one of the biggest matches of the knockout round.
The rivalry already has recent history. Portugal beat Spain in the 2025 Nations League final, and Ronaldo’s side will now try to repeat that success on the World Cup stage.
But Spain will ask bigger questions than Croatia.
