The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that the party has successfully uploaded the name of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party leader disclosed that the NDC had filed a notice of appeal challenging a recent court judgment, alongside an application for a stay of execution. According to the statement, both processes have been duly served on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the commission.
The party further revealed that INEC granted it access to the nomination portal, enabling it to commence the submission of candidates’ names in accordance with the commission’s electoral timetable.
“My name and that of the presidential candidate have been uploaded to the INEC portal, while that of the vice-presidential candidate will be uploaded tomorrow upon completion of the deposition. The process is also ongoing for other candidates,” the statement said.
The NDC maintained that it remains a duly registered political party that has actively participated in all electoral processes, stressing that its primary elections were conducted under the observation and monitoring of INEC.
According to the party, the emergence of candidates for various elective offices has been concluded, with the remaining task being the administrative submission of candidates’ names to the electoral commission.
The party noted that, under the INEC timetable, it has until July 11 to upload the names of its National Assembly candidates and until July 17 to submit those of its governorship and State House of Assembly candidates.
Appealing for calm, the National Leader urged members and supporters not to be discouraged by recent developments, expressing confidence that the party has ample time to complete the nomination process for all candidates.
The statement also acknowledged disagreements that arose during the party’s primary elections but said reconciliation efforts were already underway to foster unity among aspirants and stakeholders across the country.
The NDC assured aspirants who were unsuccessful during the primaries that they would be fully integrated into campaign structures, committees and other party activities, describing them as an indispensable part of the party’s grassroots strength.
The party congratulated all its candidates, members and supporters while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
It also commended INEC for what it described as professionalism in handling the party’s registration and nomination processes, while calling on the electoral commission, the judiciary and security agencies to remain impartial in protecting the country’s democratic institutions.
According to the statement, with the appeal and related applications now before the courts, the party is confident that the legal issues surrounding the matter will be resolved in accordance with the law.
