In a remarkable blend of public service and cultural honour, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, has been conferred with the prestigious title of Okanlomo of Ancient Apomu Town.
The honour, announced on April 30, 2026, was bestowed by His Royal Majesty, Oba Kayode Adenekan Afolabi (Atoyebi II), the Alapomu of Apomu, following extensive consultations in line with the customs and traditions of the ancient town.
According to the royal proclamation, the title recognises Lakanu’s exemplary leadership, integrity, and significant contributions to the development and stability of Yoruba land. The monarch emphasized that the conferment is both an honour and a call to duty.
“As Okanlomo, you are entrusted with preserving our cultural heritage while promoting unity and progress within and beyond Apomu,” the monarch stated.
The title of Okanlomo is regarded as one of the respected honours within the Apomu traditional institution, reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to society.
The conferment has been met with admiration from community stakeholders, who described it as a well-deserved recognition of Lakanu’s distinguished career and enduring impact beyond his years in active policing.
With this elevation, Lakanu steps into a revered cultural role, further cementing his legacy as both a public servant and a custodian of tradition in one of Osun State’s historic communities.
