The Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Bernard Owusu , has called for quick and serious action to stop illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
He spoke during the International Workers’ Day celebrations held at Jackson’s Park in Koforidua .
The event brought together workers, union leaders, government officials, and other important figures, including John Dramani Mahama .
In his speech, Mr. Owusu said galamsey is still a big problem in Ghana, even though many efforts have been made to stop it.
He warned that if illegal mining continues, it will destroy the environment and hurt the economy.
He explained that when rivers are polluted or destroyed, it affects farming, businesses, and jobs. This can lead to more unemployment and hardship for ordinary Ghanaians.
The TUC has once again made it clear that it wants stronger action against illegal mining.
According to Mr. Owusu, stopping galamsey is very important to protect Ghana’s future and improve the lives of workers.
He stressed that the country cannot afford to keep losing its natural resources, adding that the fight against galamsey must be taken seriously and handled with urgency.
