President John Dramani Mahama has said he supports giving more power to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), especially when it comes to prosecuting corruption cases.
Speaking at the International Workers’ Day event in Koforidua, he explained that although the issue is currently in court, the government believes the OSP should be strong enough to do its job well.
He said some of the legal questions are still being handled by the courts, including the Supreme Court of Ghana.
But even so, he believes there is room to give the OSP special powers to prosecute corruption cases effectively.
This comes after a recent ruling by the High Court of Ghana, which questioned whether the OSP has the legal authority to prosecute cases on its own.
The court suggested that this power belongs to the Attorney-General. That decision has been challenged, and the final say will now come from the Supreme Court.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor was set up in 2017 to investigate and prosecute corruption, especially cases involving public officials. It was designed to work independently, without political interference.
However, this ongoing legal dispute has raised concerns about how much power the OSP really has and whether it can fully carry out its role in fighting corruption in Ghana.
