The Ada East Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has used this year’s Constitution Week celebration to encourage students to become responsible digital citizens by using social media wisely and upholding the principles of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The civic education programme, held at the Ada Technical Institute, aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of the Constitution, promote responsible citizenship and encourage positive behaviour both online and offline.
Addressing the students, the Ada East Director of the NCCE, Madam Faustina Blewusi, reminded them that they are the country’s future leaders and that the decisions they make today, especially on social media, could have a lasting impact on their lives.
She cautioned students against the irresponsible use of social media, stressing that their online activities could affect future educational, professional and leadership opportunities.
“If you aspire to occupy any leadership position in the future, your past engagements online can be used against you. Think before you post, comment or share content because the internet never forgets,” she advised.
Madam Blewusi also urged students to avoid spreading misinformation, engaging in cyberbullying, promoting hate speech or sharing offensive content, noting that such actions could damage their reputations and limit future opportunities.
Speaking on the significance of Constitution Week, she said the sensitisation campaign would be extended to more schools across the Ada East District to broaden civic education among young people and deepen their appreciation of their constitutional rights and responsibilities.
She explained that the Directorate had recently organised Citizenship Week celebrations in basic schools to instil patriotism, discipline, respect and civic responsibility in pupils from an early age, adding that these values are essential in raising responsible and law-abiding citizens.
Madam Blewusi identified child labour, child trafficking, poor parental responsibility and the irresponsible use of social media as some of the major social and civic challenges facing the district.
She said the NCCE continues to address these issues through sustained public education campaigns, school outreach programmes and community engagement.
She added that the Directorate also uses its weekly civic education programme on local radio stations to educate residents on constitutional governance, peaceful coexistence, responsible citizenship and other national issues.
She encouraged students to become ambassadors of good citizenship by respecting the laws of the country, making responsible choices online and contributing positively to Ghana’s development.
