Late goals hand Barcelona 14-point lead in La Liga title race

Barcelona scored two late goals to put the club on the cusp of successfully defending their Spanish La Liga title with a 1-0 win over Osasuna.

The stubborn hosts threatened the champions-in-waiting for long stretch of the match but the Catalan giants improved in the second half to assert their dominance before netting two crucial goals within five minutes in the final ten minutes of the match to break the hosts’ hearts.

Barcelona nearly went behind when Ante Budimir hit the post, and the striker had another chance saved by Joan Garcia. Jon Moncayola also stretched the former Espanyol goalkeeper before the visitors took control midway into the second half and created several chances.

The resistance of the home side was eventually broken by Lewandowski who headed home Marcus Rashford’s pinpoint cross for the lead on 81 minutes. Torres doubled the lead five minutes later with a well-placed finish into the bottom far corner to double Barcelona’s advantage.

Raul Garcia’s header provided a nervy finish to the encounter but Barcelona held on to claim all three points at the El Sadar stadium, and a 10th consecutive league win for the first time since 2016.

Hansi Flick’s side has 88 points from 34 matches and extended their lead over arch rivals Real Madrid to 14 points. They can win the league if Real Madrid fails to claim victory in their league fixture at Espanyol on Sunday.
