Ogun Government Bans Graduation Ceremonies, End-of-Session Parties in Schools

The Ogun State Government has prohibited the conduct of graduation ceremonies and end-of-session parties in both public and private schools across the state, citing concerns over the financial pressure such events place on parents and guardians.

The directive was announced in a circular issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and signed by the Director of Education (Private Schools), A.A. Bisiriyu.

Dated June 17, the circular instructed all school administrators to immediately discontinue the organisation of graduation ceremonies and end-of-session celebrations. It also warned that schools that violate the directive would face appropriate sanctions.

According to the ministry, the decision followed reports and complaints that some schools were using such events as a means of imposing additional financial obligations on parents and guardians.

The circular stated that the ministry had observed cases where administrators of public and private schools allegedly collected excessive fees from parents under the guise of organising graduation and end-of-session activities for students.

The government described the practice as unacceptable, stressing that schools should focus on educational activities rather than ceremonies that create unnecessary expenses for families.

It further emphasised that the state government does not support the organisation of graduation and end-of-session parties for pupils and students in any class, directing all school owners to comply with the ban with immediate effect.
