Plateau: Family seeks justice for son killed over mistaken identity

The family of Abdullahi Bello, who was killed around the Rantiya community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, has called for justice, alleging that he was attacked after being mistaken for a Fulani man.

The victim’s sister, Hannatu Bello, told Daily Trust that her younger brother left home on Sunday but never returned. She said the family was later contacted by the police, who informed them that he had been found unconscious after being attacked by a mob.

According to her, she and their mother rushed to the General Hospital in Dadin Kowa, where they found him unconscious. He later died from his injuries.

She said the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) told them that police officers on patrol around 3 am on Monday received information from vigilantes that Bello had been beaten by some people who mistook him for a Fulani man.

“I asked the IPO if my brother was okay, but he asked me to come to the hospital. When we got there, we found him unconscious.

“From the injuries on his body, he was macheted and strangled, and blood was coming from his mouth. The IPO asked if he was Fulani, but I told him he was not. He was my blood brother, and we are not Fulani,” she said.

Hannatu described the killing as inhumane and urged the Plateau State Police Command to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

She said the deceased’s mobile phone remained in police custody and appealed to investigators to examine his call records.

“Now that his phone is with the police, they should track his calls and identify the last person who spoke with him before the incident.

“We are peaceful people and only want justice. We believe the government will ensure justice is served,” she added.

The Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, said he was not aware of the incident but had seen reports about it on social media and promised to verify the information.

The spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alabo Alfred, did not respond to calls or a WhatsApp message sent by our correspondent as of press time.
