KENYA: Twist as FKF Executive Committee Writes to FIFA Over Federation Crisis

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has received a formal response from the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) National Executive Committee (NEC), as the ongoing leadership crisis within the federation deepens.

In a letter addressed to FIFA on May 2, FKF clarified that the actions to suspend FKF president Hussein Mohammed were only precautionary and administrative and not motivated by any forces, but were strictly acting within the jurisdiction of their mandate.

“We wish to clarify that the actions undertaken by the NEC were precautionary and administrative in nature,” said the body.

Adding, “They were aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the Federation and ensuring that any ongoing or anticipated investigations are conducted independently and without interference.”

The NEC confirmed it submitted its response on May 1, 2026, well within the deadline FIFA had set, following the global body’s initial correspondence dated April 26, 2026, which requested clarity on recent decisions made by the committee.

The submission, the NEC says, is backed by relevant documentation, records, and evidence, all designed to support what it describes as a transparent and objective review process into the circumstances surrounding its controversial resolutions earlier in April.

FIFA’s involvement in the matter stems from a letter the global body sent to FKF on April 26, 2026, in which it confirmed it was working jointly with Confederation of African Football (CAF) to assess the situation and determine the root cause of FKF’s leadership wrangles.

The world football governing body specifically wanted to establish whether due process was followed in the NEC’s decisions made on or around April 24, 2026, when nine of the 14 NEC members voted to suspend FKF President Hussein Mohamed.

“FIFA, in coordination with CAF, is currently assessing this matter with a view to gaining a clear and accurate understanding of the circumstances surrounding the adoption of the Resolution,” part of the FIFA statement directed at FKF read.

FIFA further directed the FKF to submit a wide range of documents, including records showing how the emergency NEC meeting was convened, proof of quorum, voting details, and evidence that the affected officials were given a fair opportunity to respond before any action was taken.

The global football body also requested written justification for the suspension decision, alongside all supporting materials, reports, and correspondence relied upon by the NEC, making it clear the review would be thorough and evidence-based rather than procedural.

FKF boss Mohammed is accused of involvement in the alleged misappropriation of Ksh42.4 million in funds originally earmarked for Kenya’s participation in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The allegations specifically involve the Ksh42.4 million in brokerage fees reportedly wired to  Riskwell Insurance Brokers Limited , a firm that was allegedly unlicensed and linked to FKF President Hussein Mohammed to operate at the time the transaction was processed, which NEC initially termed as a critical‘red flag’.

This led to the partial ouster of Hussein Mohammed, and he was replaced by the former International football star and FKF’s Deputy President, McDonald Mariga, for some days before the High Court quashed the decision on April 27.
