KENYA: Fresh Details on Skydiving Plane Accident in Diani Emerge

Fresh details have emerged after a skydiving plane operating in Diani was forced into an emergency landing on Saturday afternoon.

The company operating the flight confirmed in a statement that every single person on board escaped without injury owing to the precautionary measures taken by the pilot.

“Thanks to the professionalism of the pilot and the strict safety procedures that are an integral part of our operations, the aircraft landed safely and all occupants are unharmed,” confirmed the flight company.

Images obtained by  Kenyas.co.ke show the plane, with its nose and front propeller appear damaged, and a broken wooden pole lies in front of the aircraft.

Amid the mild veracity of the situation, the company maintained that “There were no injuries.”

The flight company detailed what happened during what was supposed to be a routine, scheduled skydiving session at the coast.

According to the company, the aircraft did not crash in the traditional sense but instead carried out a precautionary emergency landing, a controlled move a pilot makes when a fault is detected.

“Today, during scheduled skydiving operations, one of our aircraft performed a precautionary emergency landing following a technical issue,” stated the flight company.

What Happens During Emergency Landing?
During an emergency landing, pilots prioritise aircraft control, declare emergencies to control for priority handling, and select the safest landing site, whether a designated airport runway or suitable off-field terrain.

Cabin crew secures the cabin, briefs passengers, and instructs brace positions while preparing exits for rapid evacuation, coordinating with emergency services positioned on standby to respond immediately upon landing safely.

Passengers are then told to fasten seatbelts tightly, remove sharp objects, and follow crew commands, including adopting brace positions. In potential water landings, life vests are located, donned, and checked properly.

Diani has had a bad history of tourist plane crashes. A major plane crash that broke the headlines occurred in the Diani and Kwale region on October last year, resulting in the deaths of all 11 or 12 people on board that same morning.

The flight was travelling from Ukunda Airstrip in Diani to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip in the Maasai Mara at the time before the tragic crash occurred.

Initial reports on casualties varied, but authorities later confirmed the deceased included eight Hungarians, among them two families, two Germans, and one Kenyan pilot operating the aircraft at the time.

The aircraft, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, crashed in the Tsimba Golini area of Kwale County after losing radar contact shortly after departure and bursting into flames.
