“Today we held a comprehensive review of the architectural designs and development plans for Baba’s Mausoleum together with Hon. Ummi Bashir, CBS, Principal Secretary for Culture, Arts and Heritage, alongside the architectural team from the National Museums of Kenya and architects from the Ministry of Works. A significant step in preserving history, honouring legacy, and creating a lasting monument for future generations,” he wrote. One of the key pieces of art that will be kept at the mausoleum in Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya county, is the historic Hummer SUV, which Baba used.

The SUV was an important part of Raila’s 2007 presidential campaign and was one of the most recognisable symbols of his political campaign.

Don Bosco Gichana, a close friend of Raila, bought and donated the iconic vehicle.

The SUV was nicknamed nyundo (Swahili for hammer) and was an association which stuck with Baba’s name throughout his political career.

According to Junior, the vehicle represents decades of political battling, determination and leadership, and thus its significance to the Odinga family and Kenyan democratic processes.
