French-Iranian Author and Filmmaker Marjane Satrapi Dies Aged 56

June 05, (THEWILL) — Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian author, illustrator and filmmaker best known for her graphic novel “Persepolis”, has died at the age of 56.

Her death was confirmed on Thursday by her family and the Élysée Palace in Paris.

A member of Satrapi’s close circle told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that she had “died of sadness” a little over a year after the death of her husband, Swedish producer, actor and screenwriter Mattias Ripa.

No official cause of death has been announced.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Satrapi, describing her as “a great artist who transformed an Iranian childhood into a universal fable.”

Born in Iran in 1969, Satrapi became internationally known through “Persepolis”, her autobiographical graphic novel about growing up during and after the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

First published in 2000, the book became a global success and was later adapted into an animated film co-directed by Satrapi. The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

She also directed films including “Chicken with Plums”, “The Voices”, starring Ryan Reynolds, and “Radioactive”, a biographical drama about scientist Marie Curie, starring Rosamund Pike.

Beyond her work in film and literature, Satrapi was known for speaking out on women’s rights and freedom in Iran. She supported the Woman, Life, Freedom movement and often criticized the Iranian government.

In 2025, she declined France’s highest civilian honour, the Legion of Honour, citing what she called the country’s “hypocritical attitude” toward Iran.

Tributes have continued to pour in from around the world, with many remembering Satrapi for her contributions to literature, film and human rights.
