April 02, (THEWILL) – Petra Kvitova claimed her 30th career title after defeating Elena Rybakina 7-6(14) 6-2 in the Miami Open late on Saturday.
The victory came as a surprise to many as Rybakina had only dropped one set in Miami and had won the Indian Wells title just two weeks prior. However, Kvitova managed to come back from an early deficit to win the match.
After the first eight games saw each player hold their service games, Kvitova managed to break Rybakina in the next game, only to be broken back later on. The set was eventually decided in a tie-breaker that lasted an intense 67 minutes, with Kvitova coming out on top with a score of 7-6(14).
In the second set, Rybakina’s serve deserted her and Kvitova was able to secure the win with another break in the eighth game of the set. Still, Rybakina broke the record for most aces in a WTA 1000 tournament in Miami even if it was not enough to claim the title.
Kvitova’s victory improved her world ranking to number 10 and sets her up well for the remainder of the season. Kvitova not only dashed Rybakina’s hopes of the uncommon “Sunshine Double”, but also proved that she was a force to be reckoned with going forward.
