Canada booked their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustáquio’s dramatic stoppage-time winner sealed a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.

With both nations playing in a World Cup knockout match for the first time, the game began at a frantic pace. South Africa made the brighter start as Teboho Mokoena tested Maxime Crépeau with a long-range effort, while Jonathan David wasted Canada’s first clear opening by volleying wide from inside the area.

Canada gradually took control and should have gone ahead before the break. Derek Cornelius met a free-kick with an unmarked header from six yards, but Ronwen Williams stopped the attempt comfortably. The South African goalkeeper was called into action again to keep out Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi’s fierce strike before watching another effort drift onto the roof of the net.

Jesse Marsch’s side kept piling on the pressure without reward. Moïse Bombito thought he had broken the deadlock with a powerful header, only for Aubrey Modiba to produce a brilliant goal-line clearance that ensured Bafana Bafana reached half-time level.

The second half offered fewer clear chances early on, but Canada remained the more threatening side. Williams denied Oluwaseyi once more in the 65th minute before Mbekezeli Mbokazi reacted quickly to stop Jonathan David from converting the rebound.

Marsch then introduced Alphonso Davies for his first appearance of the tournament, and the Bayern Munich defender almost made an immediate impact. His perfectly weighted pass released Promise David, whose shot rolled narrowly wide of the post.

South Africa briefly threatened through Oswin Appollis, whose powerful strike was pushed away by Crépeau, but it proved to be their final meaningful chance.

With extra time looming, Canada finally found the breakthrough. A loose ball fell kindly to Eustáquio on the edge of the area, and the midfielder rifled an unstoppable finish into the bottom corner to score Canada’s first-ever World Cup knockout goal.

The late strike secured a famous victory for the co-hosts, ending South Africa’s memorable World Cup campaign and sending Canada into the last 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco.
