Arsenal Reach UCL Semi-Finals With 1-0 Aggregate Win Over Sporting CP

April 16, (THEWILL) — Arsenal are into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a goalless stalemate with Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday completed a 1-0 aggregate victory.

Kai Havertz’s late effort in the opening leg proved decisive, and Arsenal will now face Atletico Madrid in the last four. Mikel Arteta’s side offered little going forward on the night, with Sporting repeatedly threatening to level the tie across both halves.

The visitors were denied by the woodwork moments before the interval, Catamo volleying against the post from Maxi Araujo’s delivery, after David Raya had already made an error to nearly gift them an opening. Earlier, Trincao had fired narrowly wide following William Saliba’s mistake, while Viktor Gyokeres dragged a dipping effort beyond the bar.

Araujo went close again after the break before Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke both wasted openings at the other end. Sporting’s penalty appeals were rejected after a challenge by Cristhian Mosquera on Araujo, and substitute Havertz squandered a late opening with a rushed backheel attempt.

Leandro Trossard struck the woodwork from Max Dowman’s corner in the closing stages, and Joao Simoesas powered wide in stoppage time before Arsenal held on to book their place in the semi-finals.
